A bus traveling on I-70 was parked on a
shoulder due to a flat tire when a tractor-trailer traveling westbound collided
with a tractor-trailer ripping it open. There were 10 people on board the bus,
8 of them sustained simple or minor injuries while 2 of them were seriously
injured, according to foxkc.com.
When reports of the incident reached
Centerpoint Medical Center located in Independence, around 118 miles from
Columbia, MO, they started preparing for large scale casualties. All 10 victims
were taken to the center after the accident where 8 were later released after
treatment. Missouri Highway Patrol in a statement described the condition of
one passenger as critical and another as serious.
Assistant Medical Director Dr. Jay
Pemberton of Centerpoint Medical Center said that they were lucky that most
patients escaped with minor injuries. He explained such collisions can have
unrestrained passengers thrown around violently thereby serious injuries could
result. The bus driver and seven more passengers had minor bruises and cuts and
were released after being treated.
Lt. Collin Stosberg said that the
tractor-trailer rear ended the bus after it went off the highway. Stockhouse
said that the locals helped the victims get off the bus and many just stumbled
out of the vehicle with bleeding hands and arms. The explosion was so intense
that many residents in the area thought it was a lightning.
Driver’s version of the accident
The driver said that he reached out for some
water when he veered off the highway sideswiping the bus. He received a
citation from the police for imprudent and careless driving. Fox 4 who had been
reporting the story said that Rush Trucking Company for which the driver worked
has a high safety standard according to Transport Department. According to
