A local man from Iowa has been slapped
with both a jail term and probation for the crime of driving under the
influence. The crime in question occurred back in the winter of last year on a
Cass County road, as reported by fremonttribune.com.
35 year old Douglas C. Heitman made an
appearance in the Cass County District court earlier in the week for his
sentencing. The charge against him was a class 1 misdemeanor charge for driving
under the influence. Furthermore, the
suspect was convicted for driving under the influence in both December and July
of 2002 and 2005 respectively.
The latest arrest was made after a state
law enforcement officer clocked him speeding at 76mph in a 60mph zone and
proceeded to pull him over. The investigation officer smelt alcohol on his
breath, following which he was subjected to a breathalyzer and field sobriety
tests and was eventually arrested.
Adding to the punishment, Heitman’s
driver’s license has also been suspended for a period of 15 years. However, he
could get an exception if he installs an ignition interlock device on all of
his vehicles, say DUI lawyers in Iowa City, IA.

DUI
- how many times is too many?
An Iowa man identified as 50 year old
Steven P. DePaepe has come under the legal scanner after his latest arrest for
driving under the influence which also happens to be his fifth arrest for DUI,
as reported by daily-chronicle.com.

When someone proves time and again that
they have a problem with alcohol and they are still able to drive legally, it
is just not acceptable and Iowa DUI attorneys agree that such persons must be
kept off the road to make it safer for all of us.
DePaepe has been charged
with aggravated driving under the influence and also driving on a
suspended driver’s license. He was pulled over after his tan Chevrolet was
spotted by law enforcement officers swerving across the road and failing to
maintain lane close to the DeKalb Oasis on Interstate 88.
A breathalyzer and field sobriety tests
proved that the suspect was indeed driving under the influence. DePaepe himself
confessed at the time to have consumed alcohol. In fact, when asked how much he
had had to drink, he responded "too much" and then went on to say
that his Mountain Dew bottle actually had vodka in it.
The prosecuting attorney requested that
bond be set at $50,000. However, Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert set bond at $5,000
and ordered that he be fitted with a SCRAM bracelet. Iowa City, IA DUI lawyers
explain that this may have been due to the fact that DePaepe had been convicted
of lesser crimes for prior drunken driving arrests.
Some people just cannot figure it out. Steven
P. DePaepe is one of them.
