Man Charged with DUI after Causing Pile-Up on I-85

The accident happened near the mile marker 18 when an SUV rammed into a semi while trying to merge into the right lane of the highway on which a semi was travelling. The driver of the semi Jr. Santos was seriously injured while his passenger suffered minor injuries. Both were taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia, around 96 miles from Winston Salem, as reported by wbtv.com.

The police later said that a third car was also involved when a woman distracted by her cell crashed her vehicle into the semi just a couple of minutes after the first crash. The female driver who rear ended the semi did not apply her brakes as she was trying to make a phone call.

The woman was seriously injured and was first airlifted to CaroMont Regional center but later she was moved to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. The police said that the third crash did not happen due to alcohol impairment or speed. However, Santos was charged with a DWI, driving without a license, unsafe lane changing, and so on.
