Causes of Truck Accidents

More than 75% of truck accidents are caused by non-truck drivers and Jackson, Mississippi truck accident lawyers know about this. Truck drivers are at fault in only 16% of all truck accidents but they may still receive worker’s comp if they are hurt. Between 2007 and 2011, there was an average of over 66 traffic fatalities each year in Mississippi, with at least one truck involved. 68% of all fatal truck accidents took place in rural areas, not cities. Mississippi is largely a rural state.

Some of the common unsafe practices that are committed by car drivers while they are in the presence of large trucks, and which often lead to truck accidents, include:
  • Driving in “No-Zones” – the areas beside and behind a commercial truck where the truck driver has zero or limited visibility.
  • Abruptly changing lanes in front of a truck.
  • Misjudging the speed of an approaching truck at an intersection and making a left turn in front of the truck.
  • Moving to the right of a truck making a right turn which Jackson, Mississippi truck accident attorneys have seen before.
  • Merging in an improper manner into traffic, resulting in a truck to brake or maneuver quickly.
  • Failure to speed up or slow down when a truck begins to merge or change lanes.
  • Passing by a commercial truck and then being blown out of position by either crosswind or air turbulence.
  • Unsafe passing, in particular, passing without sufficient headway.
  • Pulling into mainstream traffic from the side of the road in front of a truck without sufficient acceleration.
  • Abandoning a car in a travel lane, or failure to get a disabled car off the highway completely and onto the shoulder.
  • Driving between large trucks.
Jackson, Mississippi truck accident lawyers know that your car does not stand a chance against a large truck.

There are a number of characteristics of commercial trucking business that can result in traffic accidents, including:
  • Inadequate training as to safety concerns, driving technique, and defensive driving.
  • Systems of compensation that encourage more hours of consecutive driving than normally advised and faster vehicle speeds.
  • Unrealistic expectations and schedules of trucking companies, encouraging drivers to rush, despite safety risks involved.
