Trucking
Companies Claim North Carolina Residency Due to Low Insurance Premiums
Wayne Goodwin, who functions as
Insurance Commissioner of North Carolina, requested the state legislature to
pass rules disallowing out-of-state truckers from claiming NC residency just to
take advantage of cheaper insurance rates, as reported by wral.com.
North Carolina has long been providing
the cheapest truck accident insurance premiums to
drivers but the policies are available to drivers who are residents of the
state or have business interests in the state.
To avail of the benefit drivers from as
far as New Jersey and New York were registering their cars in North Carolina
but it all changed when a law was passed prohibiting these registrations.
Goodwin is of the opinion that the same thing now is happening in the insurance
market that deals with commercial vehicles. This is why the law needs to be
altered once more by the state.
Recently legitimate businesses in the
state suffered due to a hike in premium rates. This happened because the
insurance companies had to honor claims placed by trucking companies with no
operation based in NC. All those over taxed businesses in New York and New
Jersey that have not left already should take off to North Carolina if they
like those rates that much. Even Raleigh, NC truck accident lawyers see the
wisdom in businesses coming to North Carolina from states that do not respect
them.
Recently Senn Freight Lines of Newberry
became a subject of interest in a WRAL investigation. They found that even
though the company is not based in NC, it has one trucker and driver registered
here. Similarly another such company, Fast Transport, had provided an address
in the registration document of the area of Wake Forest but when the
investigator reached the spot not a soul was seen and neither were any trucks
visible. A spokesperson said that it served as their accounting headquarters
but clearly they were misleading WRAL reporters.
Goodwin said that state businesses must
be able to take advantage of the cheaper rates but are prevented from doing so
under the present situation due to the actions of certain out-of-state trucking
companies who are lying and misleading insurers regarding their base of
operations.
Again, those businesses that are still
in New York and New Jersey that have not left already, they should just
relocate to North Carolina. North Carolina respects them more on every level.
