while on duty by a car driver who was allegedly driving under

The two-vehicle crash took place at 2:07
am at Fourth Street and Etiwanda in Ontario, just outside of the Auto Club
Speedway.
San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod
Burguan said that Officer Bryce Hanes had just left West Valley Detention
Center in Rancho Cucamonga after dropping off an arrestee when he was
broadsided by a 2008 Dodge Charger. He
said that the officer had the right of way and an eyewitness saw the alleged
DUI car driver run a red light while heading east. San Bernardino County DUI

According to KTLA
5, the alleged DUI auto driver sustained minor injuries and was also
transported to a local hospital for treatment. Since then, he has been released
from the hospital and is currently going through an interview at the Ontario
Police Department. Hanes, 40 however, suffered major injuries and was
pronounced dead after being rushed to Kaiser Permanente Fontana Medical Center.
Ontario police have not released the
suspect’s name but he has been identified as a 27-year old resident of Fontana.

Ontario police Sgt. Jeff Higbee said
that the suspect was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI causing injury or
death and vehicular manslaughter.
Several streets around the site of the car
crash were expected to be closed for a couple of hours to enable Ontario police
to work to determine the rate of speed at which both Hanes’ and the suspect’s
vehicles were traveling and also to determine whether Hanes was wearing a
seatbelt.
Chief Burguan said that Hanes was the
third police officer in San Bernardino to die in a year. Two other officers
were killed while they were off duty.
