African American Man who was Shot by a Police Officer was Awarded $23.1 Million

How many family members does he have now?

How many incredible business ideas from his family members and friends has he already heard about?

According to a CBS News report, a jury in Fort Lauderdale, Florida has passed a verdict where they have awarded a staggering $23.1 million dollars to a 22 year old African American male identified as Dontrell Stephens after he was unconstitutionally shot by a sheriff’s deputy. Stephen’s criminal defense lawyer or legal counselor performed well.

Was Stephens going to make this much money in his life time?

The plaintiff claimed the incident as a civil rights violation that has helped him to win the case, criminal defense attorneys say. The jury comprised of 6 female jurors and two male jurors and they contemplated their decision for 3.5 hours before their multimillion verdict. The jury found that the sheriff’s deputy Sgt. Adams Lin violated Stephens’ civil rights by shooting him. Unfortunately, Stephens is now paralyzed and restrained to a wheel chair for the remainder of his life says his criminal defense lawyer.

Many other people believe $1 to $2 million would have been more logical.

Sheriff’s Deputy that shot black man claims he though man was reaching for gun

When cross examined, Sgt. Adams Lin testified that the reason he shot at Stephens was because Stephens rode his bicycle into the midst of the traffic and when he was pulled over, he reached for his waistband and Lin thought he was reaching for a handgun and fired four rounds in self-defense.

On the other hand, Stephens and his legal professional had a completely different version of the story where they claim that Stephen was fully cooperative with the instructions of the police officer and also raised his hands when instructed to by the deputy, which is when he took fire.

Jurors had some concrete evidence in the form of a dashboard video recorded by Sgt. Lin’s car where it was determined that his left hand was empty and his right hand was clutching onto a cell phone.

Far too much money

The defendant’s legal representatives will file an appeal against the verdict, not to challenge the findings of the jury itself, but to reduce the damages awarded which is just plain ridiculous. The defense was mostly based around the claim that Sgt. Adams Lin had made an objectively reasonable mistake when he shot Stephens, which criminal defense lawyers say the jury may have bought except for the fact that Lin did not shot once or even twice, but four times.

As this incident occurred right in the thick of a time when the Black Lives Matter campaign was starting to really pick up steam to anarchists, liberals, anti-police zealots, hypocrites (if they need police they are calling 911) and so on, Stephens’ lead lawyer commented to the press that the jury’s verdict would not only benefit his client personally, but would go a long way in restoring faith in the justice system among African American communities.

What would restore faith in all communities is more job development which could happen if taxes were lowered, regulations curtailed, oil shale development on federal lands authorized, the ACA eliminated, Dodd/Frank eliminated, corporate tax significantly lowered, tax code simplified, and if you did things millions of high paying jobs would be created in the months following these initiatives. History proves it! See JFK, see Ronald Reagan.

Police officer overreacted

Furthermore, Stephens’ legal counsel was of the opinion that such verdicts are a victory for good law enforcement officers that are wrongfully stigmatized for being violent towards young black men because of the wrong doings of a small portion of their colleagues across the country.
In a statement issued on Lin’s behalf the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office expressed shock and disappointment at the verdict. The statement terms Sgt. Lin a minority himself who worked in the neighborhood of the incident for many years.

He is said to have worked within the community on several projects to raise funds for underprivileged African American youth. Lin also has fostered an African American child and continues to encounter other African Americans and minority citizens in the line of duty.

If you or a loved one has been wrongly accused of a crime or face criminal charges for DUI or any other misdeed, make sure to consult with a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible to protect your rights.
