The new year brings with it resolutions, the hope for
change, and fresh starts. For the people of North Carolina, the new year will
bring with it new traffic laws. In December, North
Carolina will enact a new law regulating the use of automatic license plate
reader systems and will change the way that licenses are revoked following
certain driving offenses.
In an effort to prevent individuals
who are wanted on criminal charges from driving, the new law will allow law
enforcement to mount cameras on police cars, road signs, and traffic lights to
capture images of license plates. The hope is that law enforcement will be
better able to catch criminals who have stolen cars and prevent potentially
dangerous individuals from getting behind the wheel.
The law doesn’t come into effect
without criticism. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures,
some worry that the information may not always be accurate. Others worry that
the information may be stored in state databases, thus infringing on a person’s
right to privacy. The data may be stored for long periods of time which could
lead to abuses.
Yet, the new law raises important
questions about who is safe or not safe to drive. Are criminals more likely to
get into auto accidents? Or, does the law unreasonably capture public data in a
misguided attempt to keep our streets safer? At the end of the day, safe driving
often has a lot to do with a person’s attitude behind the wheel. Personal
responsibility, lack of distraction, and commitment to defensive driving all
contribute to accident prevention.
Only time will tell whether these
new laws will actually keep roads safer and prevent accidents. Attorney J. Boyce Garland Jr. in Gastonia handles car accident cases each year and is an advocate for keeping the roads of North Carolina safer. You can visit his website at www.jboyceattorney.com.
