Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera have
been indicted in the
shooting of Daniel Markel, a Florida State University law professor in July
of 2014. As reported by the Tampa Bay Times, the shooting may have been
sparked off by his ex-wife Wendi Adelson, a fellow attorney, following a bitter

A Leon County jury began deliberating
last Thursday and returned formal charges the next day against Garcia and
Rivera. While Rivera is serving time in prison for another crime, Garcia was
arrested last month by the FBI and Tallahassee police. The duo is alleged to
have shot Markel in the head in his garage.
Court records indicate that the killing
was part of a murder-for-hire plot although an affidavit from the Tallahassee
Police Department to a judge doesn’t name the party or parties who are

Earlier, a Sun Sentinel report indicated that Luis
Rivera of Miami Beach, also known as King Tato, was part of several Latin King
gang members who were arrested in South Florida last year. The 33 year old was
head of the gang’s North Miami clan who was sentenced to over 12 years in
federal prison on a racketeering conspiracy charge by a Fort Lauderdale federal
court.
Records also indicate that Adelson’s
parents wanted her to put pressure on Markel to allow them to relocate to South
Florida. Her brother, Charles Adelson, is also alleged to have disliked Markel.
Wendi Adelson was a fellow law professor at FSU with Markel before moving on to
work as a law clerk in the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals.

Divorce Attorney Granted $350,000 in Punitive Damages

The divorced couple alleged that the
lawyer fees was inflated, which was in fact a lie. Evidence indicated that they
had a written retainer agreement of $300 an hour. At trial, Blake and Brizon
admitted that they were not charged four times more as posted in the online
reviews. The court dismissed Blake and Brizon’s claim that they were protected
by the First Amendment and that their online reviews were statements of
opinion.
