Off-Duty Oakland County Deputies Face Jail Time after a DUI Accident

A drinking binge on St. Patrick’s Day has left two off-duty deputies from the Oakland County Sheriff’s office charged and arraigned for a DUI. Not impressive! Drunk driving accident lawyers in the area are reading about this case with intensity.

Deputies Drew Sackner, 29, and David Weaver III, 25, found themselves on the wrong side of the law when Sackner decided to get behind the wheel and caused an accident on University Drive in Pontiac. His vehicle rear-ended a 70 year old woman’s vehicle who had to be rushed to hospital for treatment. He failed to stop at the scene of the accident as well. Icing on the cake!

As reported by clickondetroit.com, Sackner, who was driving, was charged with a DUI with a high BAC. Other charges included failure to stop at the scene of the accident, and possession of a firearm under the influence. Weaver III was charged with possession of a firearm and for permitting a person to drive in an inebriated condition.

Toxicology reports indicate that Sackner’s BAC was .20% while Weaver’s registered .13%. According to drunk driving accident lawyers, any driver found with a BAC of .17% or more will face Michigan’s ‘Super Drunk’ law that attracts harsher punishment. This includes up to 180 days in prison and license suspension for a longer duration.

Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard said that the deputies violated the public’s trust and that their actions were simply inexcusable. Bail was set at $5,000. They are scheduled to appear on court on April 26th while a hearing regarding their termination is likely to be held in a week. Legal experts believe that the victim may have the right to claim compensation for the DUI accident depending on the circumstances of the case.
