Bow Legged Correction with Fat: Little-Known Facts

Bow legged correction by Leonard Grossman, M.D.

Bow legged correction with fat is a relatively new procedure. Traditionally, children suffering from bow legs received little to no treatment, as the condition usually would resolve on its own. For more severe cases, children would use special shoes, braces, or casts.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, the major symptom and sign of bow legs is having knees that do not touch when ankles are together. Bow legs can be caused by various illnesses, including abnormal bone development, Blount’s disease, fractures that do not heal properly, lead poisoning, and rickets due to a lack of vitamin D. However, in most cases of bow leggedness, the bones are not crooked.

Dr. Leonard Grossman, M.D., a surgeon who pioneered bow legged correction with fat, explains that more than 90% of cases of bow legs occur, not due to crooked bones, but because the inner portion of the calf is deficient or lacking muscle bulk and fat. The treatment for this deficiency doesn’t involve the bones at all, but instead, involves the use of the patient’s own fat to fill out the areas that don’t have volume.

Dr. Grossman and other cosmetic surgeons have been performing bow legged correction with fat for decades, but until recently, there was no research studying the efficacy of the treatment. Just last September, Oxford University Press’s Aesthetic Surgery Journal released one of the first published findings about the effectiveness of bow legged correction using fat.

The study found that bow legged correction with fat is safe and effective. Virtually all the patients saw permanent and lasting correction to their bow leggedness. The sample set of patients included those seeking bow legged correction with fat for aesthetic reasons and to correct congenital defects. Some patients were able to get desired results with just one treatment, while 31% underwent a second round of fat injection to get desired results.

Patients can resume normal life activities and even go back to the gym within five days after the surgery is performed. Patients can walk immediately after surgery and thus can return to work the day following the procedure
.
Bow legged correction with fat is not for everyone. Patients must have desired areas of fat that can be removed using a liposuction procedure. Not all patients will have enough fat to support the surgery. However, for patients who are healthy, who have realistic expectations, and who also have fat in unwanted areas that they’d like to eliminate, bow legged correction with fat is the perfect solution. Not only do patients get to rid themselves of unnecessary fat, but they also get to achieve the straightened legs they’ve dreamt of.

If you are suffering from bow legs, contact a cosmetic surgeon today to learn about your options. Many patients can correct the condition with a safe, pain-free procedure that doesn’t require the re-setting of bones. Bow legged correction with fat is safe, effective, and studies have found that the results are long-lasting.
