Wish to become a US citizen? What are the benefits of naturalization?

Any permanent US resident is entitled to apply for citizenship via the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). For the most part, the process is fairly easy unless there are a few drawbacks such as a criminal charge or conviction. The cost of the process is comparatively low while the benefits are plentiful, according to Cuyahoga County, OH immigration lawyers.

Becoming a naturalized citizen brings with it several advantages as compared to a green card holder. Some of the important benefits include:
  • It is not necessary to renew your green card every ten years. In addition, you are not required to carry your green card any longer.
  • There is no risk of removal or deportation although green card holders can be deported if they commit specific types of crimes. A US citizen who commits a crime might go to prison but will never be deported. However, if the USCIS ever finds out that you made false statements to gain lawful permanent residence or US citizenship, you are most likely to be deported according to Ohio immigration attorneys.
  • Armed with citizenship, travel to other countries and re-entry into the United States becomes much easier. US citizens also enjoy the privilege of easier entry into nations worldwide. In many cases, you can visit several countries sans a green card – you need to have a passport though of course.
  • As a US citizen, you can petition to bring more of your family members to the country as compared to green card holders. Cuyahoga, OH immigration lawyers point out that you can petition for siblings, married children, and parents while the waiting period is significantly lesser.
  • When you acquire citizenship, your unmarried kids under 18 automatically become US citizens under certain conditions. They must be legal permanent residents, reside in the US, and must be under the physical and legal custody of their naturalizing parents.
  • As a citizen you have the right to vote as well as run for public office.
  • Citizens are entitled to receive grants, federal jobs, and many other government benefits. Certain jobs require you to be a US citizen, especially federal, state, and local government jobs. Many federal scholarships and grants are available to US citizens alone as they should be but because of the weak economy based on high taxes and job killing regulations there are fewer scholarships available.

Regarding the point made in deporting a criminal, have you seen the show House of Cards? Francis Underwood (Kevin Spacey), who is now the President in the show, killed a reporter and a low ranking politician. Now we know Ted Kennedy killed a woman in a drowning incident and many people suspect the Clintons have done some bad stuff too. The Underwoods are based on the Clintons, this is why this show is so believable.

Just recently, someone was killed in DC, shot in the back, nothing stolen, which is raising some eyebrows. But it is true that if you are a US citizen and you commit a crime you will not be deported. Where would you be deported to if you were born in America? For instance, Hillary Clinton has committed perjury but she has not been convicted yet because she is a politician. She lies all the time and she has lied to Congress and to investigators. But if she is ever convicted, she will not be deported. What country would want her anyhow?

Now if you just became an American citizen and you commit a crime, yes, you will not be deported. You will be sent to an American prison. Stay out of trouble either way! Do not hang out with certain people.

The Naturalization Process

If you can meet the various legal requirements without any complications, becoming a US citizen is a reasonably straightforward process. To initiate the process you need to file the N-400 application along with the requisite fee.

You will then be scheduled for an appointment for a background check as well as fingerprinting. The next step is an interview with an USCIS official and a civics and English test which some people believe are far too easy to pass. The final step in the process is the Oath Ceremony, following which you will obtain your certificate of naturalization.

Immigration law is complex and going through the process of US citizenship can be a daunting task if you don’t follow the procedure or make any errors. This is why it makes perfect sense to hire an Ohio immigration lawyer to navigate you through the process.
