Aliens or immigrants
visit the US for various reasons. A large percentage of people come here with
the hopes of becoming an US citizen and then there are those who only enter the country for a temporary
period to fulfill an employment assignment, do business, or to study at one of
the prestigious institutions.
Remember, there is a
deep co-relation between the immigration services and the Selective Service
system. Therefore, it is important to determine if you need to register with
the Selective Service system and an immigration lawyer can help you with this.

You really do not have anything to worry about. No one is going to force you into military service, not when there is so many volunteers because of this pitiful economy. You can see the world in the navy but if you want to remain at home that is fine. You need to make sure you do this right though. You do not want to hurt your citizenship chances. You should speak with an immigration lawyer and you find one using this legal digital resource tool: http://immigration.usattorneys.com/. |
What is selective service?
The US military is
comprised of volunteers who enlist to provide services in various fields. They
serve for a total of 2 to 4 years for which there are paid (though the navy
does not pay for their uniforms). For the most part, the government ensures
that the military is fully staffed and has enough men to meet it duties and
responsibilities (in this recession, that is not hard to do). However, there
might be an emergency when the US military might feel the need of more people
but the only emergency now is that the US military is facing strange cutbacks
when America spends billions and billions on a health care system it does not
want nor can afford.
For instance, if a
large war breaks out or a national disaster the US military might need extra people.
This is the time they can turn to the Selective Service System to fulfill their
demand. The military uses this system to keep track of those who can be asked
to help the military during times of dire need.
Registering with the
SSS does not mean that you will be pressed into active service and your
immigration attorney will explain that to you. It also does not imply that you
are joining US military. It simply means that the government knows where and
how to contact you if there is an emergency to provide assistance. You could also
visit the Selective Service website or register at any US post office.
Who must register and what are the exceptions?
Even though men between
18 and 25 are required to register, there are some exceptions for foreign
nationals. It is also not mandatory for women to register themselves. If you
need help then it would be prudent to consult an immigration lawyer.
Foreign nationals must register if:
- they are lawful permanent residents or LPR
- they have entered illegally without going through the proper immigration processes that undocumented immigrants and illegal aliens must register themselves for
- they have a temporary non immigrant visa or a visitor visa which has been expired for over 30 days
- they have a student visa which has expired
- they have entered the US under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) i.e. they are allowed entrance without a visa but have stayed beyond the 90 days that is permitted in the VWP
- they have refugee status or has been given asylum due to unsafe conditions in their home country
- they are seasonal agriculture laborers working in the US
- they had a valid non-immigrant visa for 30 days which has expired
- they have a non-immigrant visa which is a temporary student visa or visitor’s visa
- they have entered the country after their 26th birthday
- they have resided in the US on a valid visa until after their 26th birthday
