Woman Sentenced to 22 Years Imprisonment in a DUI Crash that Killed a 6 Year Old

A tragic accident that occurred in Santa Ana back on June 26th, 2012, in which the suspect was convicted for driving under the influence, claimed the life of a 6 year old girl.

DUI lawyers in Los Angeles, CA know that pedestrians need to be wary of drunk drivers.
As reported by nbclosangeles.com, the perpetrator was sentenced recently and handed down a 22 year to life prison sentence. The car accident also left the sister and mother of the deceased victim with serious brain injuries according to police reports.

The defendant in the case is 37 year old Jessicah Louise Cowan from Lake Hughes (yes, the name is spelled with an h at the end which does not make any sense at all). She has been convicted of second degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter, and several other charges, which is the most likely outcome in such circumstances say DUI lawyers in Los Angeles, CA.

Driver was three times over the legal BAC limit

Cowan was subjected to a breathalyzer test after the crash following which her blood alcohol concentration (BAC) registered a shocking 0.24%, which is thrice the maximum legal limit allowed for operating a motor vehicle in the state, according to California DUI attorneys.

Law enforcement officers searched Cowan’s vehicle after the accident and discovered two mini bottles of vodka, marijuana, and a smoking pipe in her Lexus. Cowan, who also has two children, apologized for what had occurred in court. She said that being a mother herself, she could not even fathom the agony of losing a baby. But why was she driving drunk then? Her legal pro made an attempt to defend the DUI charge by claiming that she was not guilty of the murder charge, but was unsuccessful in his attempts.

Once in a while, not often, California makes the right decision.

Furthermore, according to the police reports, Cowan left the scene after the collision until a witness who saw the accident occur pursued her and blocked her way forward using his own car. Cowan is said to have run two red lights just moments prior to crashing into the mother and her two daughters who were walking to a restaurant that morning to get some pancakes.

Los Angeles, CA DUI lawyers point out that leaving the scene of an accident only leads to additional charges since it is mandatory for anyone involved in an accident to remain at the scene and inform law enforcement and render aid if possible.

Cowan’s defense lawyer tried to put up a defense claiming his client had received a phone call when she looked down at her phone, busted a red light, and crashed into the family walking to get something to eat. He also added that Cowan was not trying to get away from the scene of the accident, and was instead just too inebriated to comprehend what had transpired and that she had struck someone.

Sorry, that excuse is pitifully lame but we know the legal counselor has to say something.
