Trooper Injured in North Charleston Accident

Troopers from the South Carolina Highway Patrol rushed to the scene of a crash that occurred at the Rivers Avenue intersection in North Charleston involving a Hanahan PD cruiser. The officer was responding to an assault when the collision happened injuring him.

The officer had the cruiser’s lights and siren activated and was responding to an assault in which the subject said the police would have to kill him. That can be done! No problem there! Hanahan PD confirmed that the officer escaped with minor head wounds while the other driver did not suffer any injuries. The highway patrol is trying to figure out how it all happened, as reported by ABC News.

Claims and Lawsuits Drain Millions from DOT resources due to Wet Road Accidents

Wet roads are a serious problem in South Carolina causing series of fatal crashes each year due to hydroplaning. But the lack of resources are preventing the Department of Transportation to carry out repair work to mend the shoulders for proper drainage and fix damaged pavement and roads that allow water to accumulate, according to a greenvilleonline.com report.

Mike Wooten who is the Chairman of DOT said in a statement that they are aware of the problem and are dealing with the issues. For Wooten the issue is a reminder of how his wife escaped in an accident about two years ago in which her car went out of control and ended up in a ditch during a heavy rainstorm.

A study conducted by the Clemson University claims that in 2010 hydroplaning was among the most common causes for accident lawsuits against highway authorities. Moreover, South Carolina accident lawyers were able to secure compensation for accident claims in 74% of these lawsuits.

States are too busy trying to deal with the immigration crisis that the White House has saddled them with. Also, just because a car hydroplanes does not mean it is not the driver’s fault. The driver should perhaps drive slower.

According to Wooten his department is unable to do proper maintenance work due to lack of funds. The state secretary for transportation claims that for proper upkeep of all state roads and bridges an additional $1.2 billion is needed. Charleston, SC accident attorneys believe this could otherwise lead to an increasing number of personal injury lawsuits and accident claims being filed. Well, what can you do? America is in a recession and has been since taxes were raised, Obamacare was imposed, Barney Frank mismanaged Freddie Mac, and so on.

In 2007 a series of accidents happened along the US 25 due to a one-mile long bad stretch. It was estimated that the reconstruction of the road will cost about $5 million. The DOT placed boards to warn people of the stretch but accidents continued to happen. In 2008 the DOT mended the road with a high friction surface treatment and the total cost was about $1 million. The treatment was so effective that accidents dropped by 56 percent.

This type of treatment is now being applied elsewhere and in many areas there has been an 81 percent drop in accidents recorded. However, DOT officials and engineers believe that accidents on the I-85 will continue if the cross slopes are not properly repaved. The contractors now are needed to document sections of the cross slopes before they start any repaving procedures. Under state laws the contractor must not make any adverse changes to these slopes and if he does make a change they will have to rectify the issues afterwards.
