Morning Crash Leaves Two Dead in Saunder’s County

29 year old Jessica Thomas of Wahoo was driving westbound in a 2008 Pontiac on Highway 92 when it collided with a truck driven by 43 year old Douglas Cerny of Osceola at around 10 am. Mr. Cerny was driving a 2000 GMC pickup. As reported by journalstar.com, emergency responders pronounced Thomas dead at the scene. Her fiancé, 32 year old Tanner Hauck who was a passenger in the vehicle, was critically injured. He was airlifted to Byran West but later succumbed to his injuries.

Witnesses say that the accident happened when Mr. Cerny’s truck ignored a stop sign. Neither Hauck nor Cerny were wearing seat belts although Thomas was wearing hers at the time of the accident. The incident is under investigation and Nebraska State Patrol is trying to put the pieces together through reconstruction of the accident scene.

It does not look good for Mr. Cerny.

Vehicular Homicide Charge Slapped on Omaha Man

According to a nonpareilonline.com report, 21 year old Bluff resident, Sarah Root was killed when her vehicle was rear ended by a pickup driven by 19 year old Eswin G. Mejia. Mejia was arrested on Sunday by Omaha PD officers on suspected DUI charges. However, District Attorney Don Kleine of Douglas County charged him with vehicular homicide on Wednesday when Root succumbed to her injuries. Douglas County, NE truck accident attorneys say that the sentencing for vehicular homicide in the state ranges from 1 to 50 years and fines up to $25,000.

If you go by what the police reports say, Root was in a 2002 Oldsmobile Bravada travelling east on L Street when the accident occurred. Apparently her SUV slowed down at a signal when her car was struck by Mejia’s 2000 Chevy pickup from behind.

Mejia was rushed to Nebraska Medical Center for a leg injury after which the officers booked him into Douglas County jail. His blood alcohol content (BAC) registered .241%, which is 3 times more than the permitted level. The officers also confirmed that he did not even have a valid license. Is Eswin G. Mejia an illegal immigrant?

According to Nebraska truck accident lawyers, this is a Class III felony if the defendant has no prior DUI conviction or a Class II felony in case of a previous conviction. The victim’s estate in this case will have the right to claim compensation for damages via a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit.

Eswin G. Mejia is in serious trouble as he should be.
