Transgender Woman Unable to Find Alternative Nursing Home after Alleged Abuse at Chariton Facility

Lequan Edwards, a transgender woman from Des Moines, who was partially paralyzed and admitted to a Chariton nursing home has alleged that she was mistreated by a nurse due to her gender. According to whotv.com, the resident who was undergoing rehabilitation at Chariton Specialty Care alleges that the nurse called her a ‘fag’ and often told her to shut up.

Nursing home abuse lawyers are concerned about this.

Edwards also claims that the nurse grabbed her by the throat and also forced her to shower in scalding hot water, following which her legs were badly burned. In the opinion of nursing home abuse lawyers this is a classic example of abuse, if the allegations are proved to be true or Lequan Edwards is not just making this up. Many people know that people who choose to go this route do not have that much credibility.

James Edwards Sr., the victim’s brother, said she was now being treated at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines and is finding it hard to identify another nursing facility because of her gender. The major problem is that she cannot be in a room with a male partner because of her identity as a woman and vice versa since she was born a male.

Not everyone is treated very well at their nursing home. A resident may need a nursing home abuse attorney in fact.
Well, Lequan Edwards should have thought of this before right?

Mercy Hospital confirmed that 90 care centers in Des Moines alone have said that Edwards can only be put in a private room but the problem is that her Medicaid will not cover the expenses. One of her major concerns of moving two hours away to a nursing facility in Muscatine or Waterloos is that her family would not be able to check on her welfare regularly.

She alleges that the nursing staff at Chariton ill-treated her for that very reason. Her brother now faces the prospects of moving her to his one bedroom apartment that doesn’t even have doors big enough to fit her wheelchair. However, Mercy Hospital has cautioned James about the idea since she currently needs 24 hour medical supervision.

Did the family warn Lequan Edwards about this before she chose to go this route? Safety and respect for other residents have to be considered too.

A recent CBS report highlighted what nursing home abuse attorneys have always cautioned about, which is abuse at the hands of other residents. According to a study by Dr. Mark Lachs and his team from Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, around 1 in 5 nursing home residents suffered verbal or physical abuse at the hands of other residents.

You have to trust the nursing home you are at.
The study involved 2,000 residents conducted in 10 urban and suburban nursing homes throughout the state of New York. The study focused on resident-to-resident abuse. What is even more alarming is that as many as 407 residents were subjected to abuse at least once during the one month period of the study.

Therefore, if your loved ones are a resident of an assisted living facility it is prudent to check on them regularly. If you believe they could be a victim of neglect or abuse by the nursing staff, make sure to speak with a nursing home abuse lawyer right away.
