Georgia Truck Accident Kills Five Coeds, Truck Driver Pleads Guilty

A truck driver from Louisiana who was criminally charged in a fiery accident that he caused on a Georgia Interstate which claimed the lives of five coeds has pleaded guilty to his charges and received his sentencing, as reported by The Augusta Chronicle.

The 59 year old truck driver, John Wayne Johnson, was charged with and has now been convicted of five counts of first degree vehicular homicide.

Johnson has been sentenced to 5 years in prison and an additional 5 years under probation after his release from prison. Had Johnson decided to plead not guilty and go to trial and then lost the case, Johnson could have been hit with a sentencing of 93 years imprisonment, say truck accident lawyers from Newnan, GA. They also point out that video footage and other evidence would have influenced any accident insurance claim.

His five year sentencing, which seems like barely a slap on the wrist for some, was part of plea bargain that Johnson’s defense lawyer was able to strike with the prosecution in exchange for pleading guilty, which was approved by the judge.

Some people are wondering if the families will accept this deal. This punishment is pathetic according to so many people and many Newnan, GA truck accident lawyers as well.

Truck Driver cannot Explain Why he did not Stop in the Accident

During the hearing, Johnson said that he was driving at around 70 mph on the morning of the accident when he noticed tail lights and saw traffic ahead of him all coming to a halt. However, for reasons even he does not know himself, Johnson just kept driving without stopping until he rear ended another vehicle.

Two vehicles were crushed by the impact of the collision and five students who were studying to be nurses were all killed. The students were all travelling from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro to their jobs at Savannah hospital.

Newnan, GA truck accident lawyers and so many other people want to know how you can do what John Wayne Johnson did? How are you that careless?
The truck operator who Johnson worked for paid as much as $73 million in order to settle the wrongful death lawsuit that named them as a primary defendant. It also surfaced that Total Transportation of Mississippi had hired Johnson despite knowing that he was fired from his previous truck driving job after falling asleep and crashing his truck, which is a violation of the law according to Georgia truck accident attorneys.

It will be much better when computers take over the driving of trucks.
