Queens Nurses Face Up to 4 Years in Prison in Nursing Home Abuse Case

Two nurses from Queens have been indicted for abusing a patient while on duty at Peninsula Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Far Rockaway. According to nydailynews.com, Esohe Agbonkpolor and Funmilola Taiwo left a disabled patient bleeding on the floor. The 51 year old man is said to be mentally ill.

Who are these people? Where do these people come from? Esohe Agbonkpolor and Funmilola Taiwo are in some serious hot water.

He fell and hit his head on the floor in the presence of Agbonkpolor, who decided to do nothing. Video footage shows the man crawling on the floor for about 12 minutes before another nurse aide forcibly dragged him back to his room. Video footage played a major role in helping the prosecution establish guilt, say Long Beach, NY nursing home abuse lawyers.

The prosecution alleged that the two nurses displayed an utter lack of care, citing that the ambulance arrived after 20 minutes after the incident. They claimed that the defendants did not even treat the resident’s wounds. Incidentally, both have been removed from the facility. According to nursing home abuse attorneys in New York, they face up to 4 years in prison on charges of endangering the welfare of a physically disabled person.

Statistics Reveal that most Perpetrators of Elderly Abuse are Known to the Victims

World Elder Abuse Awareness month is being observed for the month of June and wivb.com reports some staggering statistics that indicate the severity of the problem. According to a survey by Legal Services for the Elderly, there are over 260,000 elderly who are subject to at least one form of abuse. As many as 24 cases of elderly abuse go unreported in New York State for every one case that is reported.

The statistics were revealed by the CEO of Legal Services for the Elderly, Karen Nicolson. Many of those victims experience abuse at the hands of caretakers. Long Beach NY nursing home abuse lawyers also point out that these statistics are a major concern and is evident from the number of cases they handle.

According to Nicolson, as much as $36 billion is lost every year in financial exploitation of the elderly across the country. Many cases of abuse are not just random but constant. Of over 1,600 cases of abuse investigated in Erie County in 2015 there were 163 cases of abuse by caregivers, 320 cases of financial exploitation, and 82 cases of physical abuse. Nicolson said that 90% of the time the perpetrator is known to the victim who is rendered helpless.

This type of behavior cannot be tolerated. Perhaps people that do this, in the most heinous way, should be executed. Just like Dexter did in the eponymous show, he “took out the garbage.” That is what Dexter was doing. Perhaps America needs to take out more of the garbage.
America needs to follow Dexter's lead.
For the most part, nursing home facilities are required to report any violation to the administrator as per federal regulations. Rather than let your loved one suffer due to the negligence of nursing home staff it is always prudent to consult a New York nursing home abuse lawyer so that strict action can be taken.
